How well do you know the Smurfs and their history?!?
A Brief History
As you may or may not know, the Smurfs started as a
Belgian comic in 1958 by Peyo which was the pen name of Pierre Culliford.
Originally named, Les Schtroumpfs, the Smurfs were introduced as small blue,
cap wearing, “humanoids” with varying characteristics and talents. Each one has
a distinct name, look and personality. With over 100 Smurfs, you can imagine
the time it took to think up those names and talents and personalities.
The word “Smurf,” was actually was thought up over dinner
with a friend and fellow cartoonist, Andre’ Franquin, who could not remember
the word for Salt. It was later translated into Dutch to “Smurf” and that is
how we know them today.
The first motion picture was introduced in Belgium in
1965, was a black and white film called Les Adventures des Schtroumpfs. It
contained 5 short film cartoon stories that were adventures based on the
Smurfs. Other short film cartoons were made in color by 1967.
From 1981-1989, Smurfs appeared on a television show and
the reruns aired until 1990. Then USA network exclusively ran the show until
1993, while the Cartoon Network ran it until 2003.
I watched this show religiously when I was a kid and
introduced my children to it. We still love it. And with a long running history, the Smurfs keep coming back.
The Smurfs first appeared on the big screen in 2011,
thanks to Sony Pictures, with the hopes of creating a trilogy. Now the 2nd
movie is coming out April 7, 2017. Are you excited yet?!?
Now not only are they on the big screen, but for decades
they have been made into comics, tv shows, toys, books, clothes, games, cereal, and temporarily
were an ice show and an attraction, with characters dressed as Smurfs walking
around, at amusement parks around the world.
About The Smurfs
The Smurfs themselves wear Phrygian caps, which are also
known as the liberty cap. In many countries throughout history, these caps
signify “freedom.”
Papa Smurf is the leader, white a white beard while the
other Smurfs are named after their characteristics such as the Seven Dwarfs or
by their profession.
They all look relatively similar with only accessories
and hair color or no hair and colored clothing or glasses to tell them apart.
Smurfette, the 1st girl Smurf was created by
the evil Gargamel to trap the Smurfs, but then their leader Papa Smurf made her
a real Smurf. Other Smurfs include, Brainy, Clumsy, Grouchy, Hefty, Vanity,
Gutsy and Jokey.
From the last Smurfs movie, the Smurfs were living in New
York city with Neil Patrick Harris’ character, who they met when they were
trying to escape Gargamel and then were trying to get back to their land.
Gargamel was trying to capture the Smurfs because he needed them to retain his
magical powers.
The movie actually had several big names behind it
including Katy Perry, George Lopez, Paul Reubens, and Alan Cummings as Smurfs,
along with Hank Azaria as Gargamel.
Now, Smurfs: Lost
Village, will introduce a whole batch of new characters and another star
studded cast/voice talents including: Demi Lovato, Rainn Wilson, Joe
Manganiello, Julia Roberts, Michelle Rodriguez, Megan Trainor, Gordon Ramsay,
Gabriel Iglesias, and Jeff Dunham and more.
What’s New?
For decades, Smurfette has been the only girl Smurf. Talk
about a man’s world, until they get to the Lost Village, which is full of lady
Smurfs. This is actually pretty significant as the entire franchise has focused
on the males and the singular female. Now it is a bit more even, even if late
in its history.
This movie, with its lovable characters, humorous antics,
and suspenseful action will appeal to every child and maybe even the adults.
Unlike their last movie, Gargamel is the only human character so it is
definitely more animated and fun.
